"A Reflection in the Hood"

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

I took a trip back to my old hood in order to reflect upon that which Allah has blessed me with.  This trip made me realize that we can never forget where we came from.  It is those experiences that led us to being who we are today.

Many enter the fold of Islam and they run away from the hood and all that connects to it, including friends and family at times.  Without a doubt, running away at times is a dire necessity and an act of self perseverance, but once we have learned to dominate our desires and manage our shortcomings, I find it necessary to return back to where it all started so that we can share with the hood that which Allah blessed us with.

This blessing of guidance and wealth is something that needs to be shared.  What good is it, if you can't use it to positively affect another individuals life. We must allow the illumination that Allah has granted us to also bring life to those dark spaces and places in life where we all once were.

This was and is the sunnah and way of the Prophets.  Allah said,

"I have sent to every a nation a messenger speaking the language of their people so that they can convey a clear message..."

These people who are still in these dark places are our people.  We speak their language and we completely understand them and their struggles.  Who better to go there and serve them, than you.

"Never forget where you came from.  Share the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon you with those from your hood (barrio).  Allah saved you and perhaps through you, He can illuminate the old neighborhood, thereby saving others as well.  Give back!"

May Allah bless you all,
